Background of the Study
In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, mobile banking has emerged as a critical channel for financial service delivery, particularly in emerging markets such as Nigeria. Heritage Bank, recognizing the need to stay competitive and meet customer expectations, recently undertook a comprehensive redesign of its mobile application. This redesign focuses on enhancing user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) elements to make the digital banking process more intuitive and engaging. By employing modern design principles and leveraging customer feedback, the bank aims to reduce friction points that previously hindered seamless navigation and transaction completion (Okafor, 2023). The redesign integrates features such as simplified menus, faster load times, biometric authentication, and personalized dashboards—all of which are underpinned by real-time data analytics. These innovations are intended not only to improve the aesthetic appeal of the application but also to drive higher digital adoption by addressing security, speed, and usability concerns.

Recent studies have shown that mobile app usability directly correlates with increased digital banking usage, as customers tend to adopt platforms that offer a smooth, secure, and responsive experience (Adeniyi, 2024). Heritage Bank’s initiative is also aligned with broader digital transformation trends in the banking industry, where the convergence of technology and customer service is essential for growth. By reducing the complexity of online banking interfaces, the bank expects to attract new customers—particularly younger, tech-savvy demographics—and retain existing ones by offering a superior digital experience. However, challenges remain, including ensuring compatibility across diverse mobile devices and overcoming network limitations in remote areas. Furthermore, continuous updates and user education are critical to keep pace with evolving cybersecurity threats and changing consumer expectations (Chinwe, 2024). Thus, this study investigates the impact of mobile application redesign on digital banking usage, exploring the extent to which enhanced usability drives customer adoption and engagement.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the promising features introduced with the mobile app redesign, Heritage Bank has encountered mixed outcomes in terms of digital banking adoption. Although initial analytics indicate improved user engagement metrics, conversion rates from app downloads to active usage remain below target levels. This discrepancy suggests that while the design improvements address some usability issues, other factors—such as intermittent connectivity, insufficient customer training on new features, and regional disparities in digital literacy—continue to impede full adoption (Eze, 2024). In some cases, customers have reported difficulties navigating the new interface, resulting in transaction delays or errors. Additionally, feedback indicates that the redesigned application’s advanced security features, while robust, may inadvertently complicate the user experience for less tech-savvy customers. These issues highlight a gap between the intended benefits of the redesign and its practical outcomes. Without addressing these challenges, Heritage Bank risks not achieving its goal of significantly increasing digital banking usage. This study, therefore, seeks to investigate the operational and user-related challenges that persist post-redesign and to recommend strategies for bridging the gap between improved design and actual customer adoption (Udo, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of the mobile app redesign on digital banking usage at Heritage Bank.

  2. To identify the technical and user-experience challenges that impede full digital adoption.

  3. To propose actionable strategies for optimizing the redesigned application to increase customer usage.

Research Questions

  1. How does the mobile application redesign affect digital banking usage at Heritage Bank?

  2. What challenges (technical and usability-related) limit the full adoption of the redesigned mobile platform?

  3. What strategies can further optimize the user experience to boost digital banking adoption?

Research Hypotheses
H₀: The mobile application redesign does not significantly increase digital banking usage at Heritage Bank.
H₁: The mobile application redesign significantly increases digital banking usage at Heritage Bank.

H₀: Technical and usability challenges do not significantly affect the adoption of the redesigned mobile app.
H₁: Technical and usability challenges significantly hinder the adoption of the redesigned mobile app.

H₀: Optimization strategies will not further improve digital banking adoption.
H₁: Optimization strategies will significantly enhance digital banking adoption.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on Heritage Bank’s redesigned mobile application and its effect on digital banking usage in Nigeria. Data will be collected from app usage analytics, customer surveys, and interviews with bank IT and marketing personnel. Limitations include variability in network conditions, differences in user digital literacy, and potential biases in self-reported user feedback.
